Brno, Jul 3 (BD) – Brno city councillors have adopted a comprehensive and wide-ranging plan to reduce air pollution in the city to below legal limits by the end of 2023, building on a previous plan adopted in June 2017.
Petr Hladík (KDU-CSL), First Deputy Mayor for the Environment, welcomed the plans: “The city council is fully aware that a healthy environment is a basic prerequisite for improving the quality of life of all residents. We have therefore adopted several measures that are feasible for the city and its companies in the short term, the implementation of which will contribute to improving air quality in Brno.”
The measures adopted as part of the clean air strategy include:
- Introduction of residential parking
- Financial support for public transport by the introduction of discounts (children up to 10 years travel free of charge, and students and seniors at discounted prices)
- Work to improve the backbone network of capacity roads (including completion of the Outer Ring Road as soon as possible)
- Ensuring the smoothest possible flow of traffic by coordinating construction work
- Enhancements to tram and trolleybus lines (including the Plotní tram project and extension of the network to Campus)
- Construction of car parks for “Park and Ride” system, adding 2,400 parking spaces in the coming years
- A network of integrated cycle routes ensuring fast and safe connections between important locations, not only recreational ones
- Optimised cleaning of roads and, in the case of large buildings, reduction of dust by above-ground cleaning
- Creation of new green spaces
- Reduction of emissions from vehicles run by the City of Brno and its organizations (giving priority to cars with alternative propulsion, ie CNG or electricity, during procurement)
- Reconstruction and modernization of thermal energy supply systems (complete replacement of steam distribution with hot water)
- Less burning of garden materials (in favour of composting and wood-chipping)
